I Got Fired

Saint Kolbe Studios started because I got fired - 10 years ago

I was fired from the (real) first job I ever held. It was in an office on campus when I was a freshman in college. I can't even bad mad about it, I completely deserved it.

While my friends got jobs on campus that allowed them to sit at a desk and study, I got one that required me to actually work. This isn't a flex. I was actively trying to get one of those jobs I could study at, but I just couldn't land one.

I did (generously) half the work I was supposed to, showed up late, missed shifts. Pretty much everything you aren't supposed to do if you like continued employment. Couple this with the fact that I left my first semester of college with a 1.6 GPA and you can guess my partying to studying ratio.

At the end of my freshman year, my boss sat me down and said they weren't going to bring me back next year. How it took that long to fire me, I have no idea.

That was the best thing that could've happened to me.

While I was fired from that job, I was given another shot. Ironically enough, in a different department in that exact same office working for Tom King, MS, MDiv. Why he thought it was a good idea to hire me is still a mystery.

TK, as everyone knew him, helped me get everything together. He taught me about how to function as an adult holding down a job and helped me grow personally and spiritually.

If I hadn't had that job, I never would've learned about post-grad service and never worked for KNOM Radio Mission, Inc. where I found my love for audio and stories.

God builds the twists and turns into our life to help us to trust Him without seeing the path ahead.

Who helped you to be where you are today?

Thanks for reading,

Joe
